Principal's Message,
by Wayne MacInnis

Dear Parents,

I’m writing to inform you that the School Advisory Board held its first meeting on December 6th prior to the winter break. During the meeting the school’s strategic plan was introduced and discussions were held on how the AB could effectively support the achievement of some of the goals listed under the plan. At the next meeting scheduled for late January, elections will take place for the three offices: Chair, Co-Chair and Secretary. The Board consists of five representatives from the parent community, two representatives from Taaleem, a teacher representative and the Principal. The responsibilities of the School Advisory Board can be summarized as providing input into the development of school-based policy, acting as a critical friend of the school and ensuring accountability. Look for more information on the activities of the Advisory Board as the school year progresses.

Advisory Board Members: Peter Rae, Brian Bielenburg, Deepa Krishnamorrthy, Aiman Arafat, Ailsa Bernhard, Angie Hollington, Clive Pierrepont, Dan Lundin, and Wayne MacInnis.

International Day: Biggest Event of the School Year, Thursday, January 26

All parents are invited to our International Day festivities, where we celebrate the more than 60 nationalities that attend our school. An assembly will take place from 8 AM to 10 AM. A "global village" with booths from many countries will be open from 12:30 to 2:45 pm. A map of the village and more detailed schedule will be published in next week's newsletter.

Primary Year students may be picked up in the classroom as early as 2 pm. However, if you choose to collect your child before that, you are responsible for their supervision.

If Middle Year and Senior Students leave before 2:45, they must use normal sign- out procedures.

Do You Know of a Business or Vendor Who Can Supply Shopping Bags for International Day?

At International Day, students collect a lot of items as they browse through the global village. If your business would like to donate shopping-type bags with your company's logo, reply to this email.

DIPLOMA SCHOOL NEWS

Grade 10 IB Diploma Preparation Meeting Monday night, Thursday, January 26.

This month we begin the important process of helping students in Grade 10 to choose the best combination of subjects for them for their last two years of Secondary School at Raha International School. On Monday January 23rd, from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the Senior Library, I will be giving a presentation about the IB Diploma. I will be reviewing the structure, the assessment, and the factors that need to be considered before deciding on a program for next year. I will also be presenting the selection of courses offered by Raha for 2012-2014. At the end of the meeting I will be handing out sign-up forms for applying to take Diploma courses at Raha International School from 2012 until 2014. Those who miss the meeting will receive the sign-up form via advisory groups later in the week. Although the choices made at this stage in the year will be non-binding we need to gather information in order to assist students towards making informed choices and signing up for a program which can lead to success.
